What should I put on the walls/boards?
This will depend on the requirements of your school, the age group you're teaching, how much space you have, what you're teaching that term etc. But consider the following ideas:
For the children
- A daily timetable
- Today's date
- A weather chart
- Class jobs
- Reading strategies
- A world map, or a New Zealand map
- Rotations for e.g. maths
- Who's in what group
- Modelled handwriting, perhaps lines you will write on
- Photos/names of who is in the class
- Birthdays
- Maori language
- Classroom routine posters
- A word wall e.g. for sight words or WOW words
- The alphabet
- Numbers 0-20
- Key competencies
- Inspirational messages, growth mindset messages
- Displays for current learning
- WOW work display
- Whole class students' work e.g. writing, art
- Who is going to after school care, who is ordering a hot lunch etc. if needed
For you/parents/relieving teachers, in an area close to your desk
- A copy of your weekly timetable
- Recent notices
- Emergency information e.g. earthquake procedure, fire alarm procedure
- Children of concern e.g. those with serious health needs
- Long term planning
- National standards posters
